Baja California Sur is one of the most desirable tourist destinations in Mexico, if not the world. With coastlines along the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortéz, Baja is home to 46 pristine beaches and dramatic cliffs offering breathtaking views.
On the world’s second-largest peninsula, there’s no time to get bored. From blue whale watching tours to snorkeling and scuba diving in the 7,100 hectares of coral reefs, activities are endless. Or perhaps you’d rather spend the day surfing and soaking up the sun in a region with 300 sunny days a year.
At the southern tip of the peninsula lies Cabo, a luxury haven for celebrities and the wealthy. Home to some of the world’s most exclusive resorts–such as Waldorf Astoria and One&Only Palmilla.
Cabo also boasts golf courses designed by legends like Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman, world-renowned spas, and top-tier aquatic sports.
But there’s luxury beyond Cabo too. All across Baja, from the port city of La Paz to the chic beach town of Todos Santos and the untapped potential of Loreto and La Ventana, real estate is available for all budgets and tastes.
I asked my team to look for exclusive and sophisticated listings across beach towns in the Baja California Sur peninsula. This is what they uncovered…
Todos Santos – Listing Price: $615,000
The Hotel California that supposedly inspired The Eagles’ legendary song is located in Todos Santos, a charming town on the Pacific coast of Baja. But the connection between the two is shrouded in legend. The Hotel California in Todos Santos exists though, and so does The Eagles’ song, of course, but there’s no certainty that one inspired the other.
What is certain, however, is that Todos Santos is a captivating town. It’s a must-visit spot for art lovers and the town’s bohemian vibe has been attracting an extensive community of expats from North America and Europe, as well as world-renowned artists seeking inspiration in its picturesque streets.
Todos Santos has become a mecca for art festivals in the Baja peninsula. Throughout the year, events showcase visual arts, cinema, theater, dance, and culinary arts. The wine festival attracts the finest sommeliers. It’s no surprise that Todos Santos is listed as one of Mexico’s “Pueblos Mágicos” (a special designation given by the Mexican government for their outstanding natural beauty, culture, history, and arts scene).
The luxurious Casa Blanca is a spacious and modern two-bedroom, two-bathroom home. It has a sunken living room with floor-to-ceiling windows, an open-plan kitchen/living/dining area, and an indoor cactus garden. There’s an outdoor swimming pool that’s surrounded by a large patio area and there’s room to include a garden or even build a casita. And the rooftop terrace offers views of the sea and the nearby mountain ranges.
Casa Blanca is being sold fully furnished and is listed at $615,000. See the full online listing here.
Loreto – Listing Price: $544,500
If you love golf as much as I do, Loreto is the place for you. This small town, six hours north of Los Cabos, is home to one of Mexico’s most prestigious golf courses. The TPC Danzante Bay was designed by renowned architect Rees Jones, and offers a world-class golfing experience with spectacular views of the Sea of Cortés. Its 18 holes are situated to showcase the natural beauty of the surroundings, creating a unique experience that blends sport, luxury, and nature.
Loreto is known as the “Aquarium of the World” for its dazzling landscapes that combine white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and desert mountains. The nearby Islands of Loreto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boast pristine coral reefs, a paradise for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts.
The town has emerged as an ideal destination for those looking for a second home, and the international community here is steadily growing, with folks drawn by the safe and relaxed atmosphere.
My team found a two-bed, two-bath condo in the Mantarraya Residences Danzante Bay, a prime example of the luxury on offer in Loreto. This 1,940 square-foot condo has a fully equipped kitchen with granite countertops, an open-plan living/dining area, and the master bedroom has a picture window and an ensuite with a tub, and a large marble shower. The guest bedroom opens out to a balcony with views of the Sierra la Giganta Mountains.
As a resident you have access to the swimming pool and tennis courts. This condo is listed for $544,500 and all the details are here.
La Ventana – Listing Price $905,000
Just 27 miles east of La Paz is the Bay of La Ventana. Strong and constant winds blowing against the Sea of Cortés make it one of the most desired spots for kite and windsurfing enthusiasts.
The town of La Ventana looks and feels distinct from anywhere else in Baja. It sits on a spectacular curve of white-sand beach backed by a series of gently sloping hills that offer stunning views of the Sea of Cortez out to Jacques Cousteau Island.
La Ventana is also popular with a variety of outdoorsy, health-conscious travelers.
Mountain biking is big here and there’s talk of an emerging diving scene, too. And like seemingly everywhere in Baja these days, La Ventana has a booming food scene (there’s lots of nice seafood spots here).
Just north of La Ventana town is the community of El Sargento, There, you’ll find this exclusive three-bedroom, three-bathroom home with its spectacular brick dome.
The 2,840-square-foot house is set on an acre of land with unobstructed views of the Sea of Cortez and the surrounding desert. The house has an open-plan kitchen/living/dining area with glass doors that open out to the patio area. One of the bedrooms has a kitchen and its own bathroom, so is set up like a little studio, perfect for guests. Outside there’s a resort-style swimming pool with a jacuzzi, a barbecue area, and an outdoor fireplace.
This one is listed for a cool $905,000…all the details are here.
Los Cabos – Listing Price: $875,000
At the very tip of Baja California Sur, you’ll find Cabo, a haven for celebrities and the ultra-wealthy. Many Hollywood stars have homes here, and many more visit, like Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney, and Robert De Niro. A scan of the tabloid press on a given day will show pictures of some stars on the beach or at a trendy restaurant.
Cabo’s journey to a luxury retreat for the rich and famous began with a starlet named Lucille Bremer, who starred in the 1944 hit Meet Me in St. Louis. This is one of the world’s most popular and desirable destinations. You have the natural beauty of the desert and mountains meeting the sea in dramatic fashion, the perpetually sunny weather, the stunning beaches.
Then there are shopping malls, smart boutiques, art galleries, gourmet markets, high-end restaurants, world-class marinas, championship golf courses, top-notch medical care… and good infrastructure connecting it all. The city also has an international airport that has expanded several times over the years to accommodate increasing visitor numbers.
If you’re looking for luxury, you’ll have no trouble finding it in Cabo. Take Penthouse Del Mar…this two-bed, two-bath penthouse is in the Quivira community, where I own a condo of my own. This property is actually two penthouses that are connected by a door, so you can open it all up, or keep it as two separate penthouses. One of the penthouses has a kitchen with a separate living/dining area. The other has an open-plan kitchen/living/dining area. Both have balconies with views of the sea.
This penthouse is located near the community’s clubhouse with concierge services, gym, cinema, heated pool, and grill. There’re also five pools across the entire community.
The listing price is $875,000 and you can find more details here.
