Carved into the rock face of the Alcazaba — the Moorish hilltop fortress that watches over Loja, in the province of Granada — this house of around 970 square feet has five bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a patio, with an upper terrace sheltered by the rock above and open views across the rooftops and countryside below.
Loja sits in a fertile valley on the river Genil, around halfway between Granada and Málaga, a town of Roman and Moorish origins with a well-preserved historic center. The streets beneath the Alcazaba still follow their medieval layout, and the town center, with schools, shops, and services, is a five-minute walk.
The surrounding countryside is good walking territory, with the Sierra de Loja rising to the south and the river valley spreading to the east and west. The Sierra Nevada — with its ski resort and hiking trails — is around an hour’s drive east.
Granada, with its Alhambra palace complex and international airport, is around forty minutes by road. Málaga, with its international airport and connections across Europe, is around an hour west.
