Imagine owning not just a home, but a whole village on Spain’s wild Atlantic coast.
A cluster of old stone houses overlooking the ocean. No traffic. No neighbors. Just wind, sea, and silence.
Today’s mailing takes us to Candelago, a forgotten hamlet on Galicia’s dramatic Costa da Morte. This entire village is on the market for €150,000 ($174,000).
That’s less than the price of a parking space in parts of New York. In fact, last July, a single parking space in Brooklyn sold for $250,000.
But here, $174,000 buys you an entire slice of old-world Spain.
Let’s dig into this unique opportunity…

In the abandoned village of Candelago, rolling green hills tumble toward the Atlantic, while old stone houses await their revival.
Why Galicia has Been on my Radar
The Spanish region of Galicia isn’t just a dot on the map for me.
It’s a neighbor when I’m spending time at the historic villa that my wife and I bought in Caminha, in Northern Portugal.
From there, I can cross the River Minho and be in Galicia in minutes.
Last year, I spent time scouting the region—especially Ourense, a Roman-era city that came onto my radar thanks to the contractors who restored my home in Caminha. They were all from there, and they spoke about its beauty and its astonishingly low real estate prices.
My scouting trip opened my eyes to Galicia’s potential. Though parts of Galicia feel less polished than across the border in Caminha, when I heard that a whole village was listed for sale, I was intrigued…

Galicia’s landscapes are dramatic and untamed—a different side of Spain entirely. The region has even been compared to Ireland.
A Village on the “Coast of Death”
Candelago is located in northern Galicia, on the region’s Costa da Morte.
The Costa da Morte—literally the Coast of Death—earned its name from centuries of shipwrecks. Today, it’s known for something else entirely: raw, cinematic beauty. Think granite cliffs, roaring Atlantic waves, and fishing towns where the seafood is as fresh as it gets.
Candelago sits just inland, with open sea views and access to the iconic Camiño dos Faros, a 120-mile coastal trail linking lighthouses, beaches, and headlands.
This is also barnacle country—home to percebes, a delicacy found clinging to the most wave‑battered rocks. Harvesters must climb onto slick, vertical cliffs while massive waves crash over them.
So, this is where you could own an entire village. Let’s see exactly what you get for your money.

This coastal village was listed for sale several years ago. A recent price reduction has drawn renewed attention.
What $174,000 Gets You
The village includes around 10 traditional stone houses, several hórreos (Galicia’s iconic stone granaries), overgrown lanes and terraces shaped by decades of abandonment, and panoramic views over hills and out to the Atlantic.
The structures are little more than ruins, a testament to the village’s years of abandonment.
Candelago has been empty since the 1970s, part of a wider pattern of rural depopulation across Galicia. What remains is a hauntingly beautiful shell—quiet, green, and full of possibility.

Decades of abandonment have left this place overgrown—but the bones of the village remain.
Why It’s Getting Attention Now
Candelago has been on the market for several years, but interest surged recently when the owners cut the price from €200,000 to €150,000 ($232,000 to $174,000). That €50,000 ($58,000) drop has put it in the spotlight.
Galicia is dotted with abandoned hamlets for sale, attracting both Spanish and international buyers who want land, history, and nature at a fraction of urban prices.
That just goes to show the extraordinary value you can find in overseas real estate when you look beyond your backyard.

This stretch of Galician coastline is famed for its raw beauty.
The Potential is Enormous
Despite its deterioration, Candelago enjoys a compelling location, with natural surroundings and seaside proximity.
The village could be turned into a base for hikers exploring Galicia’s wild Atlantic edge….a private family compound with 10 restored stone homes clustered around a shared courtyard…or a seasonal writers’ retreat where creatives trade city noise for sea air and silence.
But restoring a village is a passion project, not a quick flip. Anyone considering this village should factor in a multi‑year timeline for renovation, as well as significant costs.
This property definitely wouldn’t be for everyone.
But for the right buyer, the reward here is extraordinary: the chance to bring a lost village back to life.
