Roquefort cheese has been aged in the caves of the Aveyron for centuries. The département sits in the north of Occitanie in southern France, a rugged limestone plateau of sheep pasture, medieval villages, and river gorges carved by the Lot and the Tarn.
Villeneuve was recently added to the official list of the most beautiful villages in the country, awarded to just over 180 communes that meet strict criteria for architecture and character. The village has a post office, medical center, bars, restaurants, bakeries, a pharmacy, schools, and a Sunday market.
