Epano Elounta, Crete, Greece: €295,000

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, a place of rugged mountains, ancient harbors, and a coastline that stretches for over 650 miles into the southern Aegean. The quiet village of Kato Elounda sits on the northeastern shore, where the Gulf of Mirabello cuts deep between dramatic hillsides.

This charming stone house of around 1,300 square feet has been renovated in traditional Cretan style with stone walls, untreated wood, and hand-crafted details throughout. At ground level, a stone-floored courtyard provides an outdoor living space with lounge seating. A metal staircase leads up to the terraces and bedrooms above. Inside, a rustic kitchen and dining room are separated from the living room by a stone archway, and a single bedroom sits off the main living area.

Upstairs, a double bedroom opens onto an en-suite bathroom. Beyond it, a sun terrace looks out over the rooftops and the shimmering water of the Elounda gulf, with a shaded pergola and a sunbathing area alongside. A third bedroom with bunk beds is accessible from the side terrace.

Elounda, with its shops, restaurants, and waterfront, is a three-minute drive. Agios Nikolaos, the provincial capital of the Lasithi region, a lively harbor town with a marina, hospital, and full range of amenities, is fifteen minutes further along the coast. Heraklion International Airport, the main gateway to Crete with flights across Europe, is around fifty minutes by road.
