These are the UNESCO hills of northeast Italy—a landscape of steep vineyard terraces worked by hand since the seventeenth century, where the ridgelines fold into each other and the villages in the valleys below look from above like something painted rather than built.
On one of those hillsides, above the village of Farra di Soligo, sits a two-bedroom house built directly into the slope. The terrace extends out over the valley—open air on three sides, around 970 square feet, the hills falling away below it. Inside: stone floors, exposed wooden beams, two majolica wood-burning stoves, and a marble fireplace. The kitchen opens through a glass door onto the terrace.
