Modica, Sicily, Italy: €159,000

Sicily sits at the southern tip of Italy, a sun-drenched island of ancient Greek temples, Baroque hilltop towns, and long sandy coastlines. The southeastern corner of the island—the Val di Noto—was rebuilt in ornate Baroque style following a devastating earthquake in 1693 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Casa Silene is a three-bedroom house of around 2,900 square feet set among the golden stone churches and palaces of Modica’s historic center. Its most striking feature lies below ground: a master bedroom and full spa wellness space carved directly into the natural rock beneath the building. The upper floors have been restored, with stone floors throughout and a terrace above. A further section remains unrestored.

Two UNESCO World Heritage sites are within 20 minutes by car. The coastline, with sandy beaches, is a short drive away. Catania’s international airport is around an hour and forty minutes by road.
