For centuries, the workshops of Sanjo City have been producing some of Japan’s finest knives, tools, and metalwork. The city sits in central Niigata Prefecture, on the northwest coast facing the Sea of Japan—a region otherwise known for rice paddies, sake, and heavy winter snows.
This elegant kominka [traditional Japanese farmhouse] dates to 1898 and sits on a plot of 27,000 square feet. The main house connects to multiple detached buildings and two kura [traditional Japanese storehouses, built with thick walls] via covered walkways. One kura has been converted into a large Western-style room with high ceilings. There is parking for eight cars.
Sanjo city center is a short drive away. The nearest train station is under two miles away. The Tsubame-Sanjo Shinkansen station, with high-speed connections to Tokyo in under two hours, is 40 minutes away.
