Sanxay, Vienne, France: €258,000

France’s Vienne department is a region of rolling green countryside, river valleys and Romanesque churches. Sanxay, a village on the banks of the river Vonne, has been inhabited since Roman times. Between the first and fourth centuries it was a significant Gallo-Roman town with a theatre, a temple, and thermal baths spread across both riverbanks. The ruins are still standing and open to visitors. Every summer opera is performed in the ancient theatre.

This lovely three-bedroom medieval house sits in the heart of the village with a garden running down to the river. The ground floor has an eat-in kitchen with underfloor heating and a wood-burning fireplace, a living room with parquet floors, and a shower room. Upstairs are three bedrooms.

Bordeaux, with an international airport and direct flights across Europe, is around two hours away. La Rochelle and the Atlantic coast are 90 minutes. Two châteaux with restaurants are nearby, as are both a Roman and a Neolithic archaeological park.
