Piegaro is a small hilltop town in this part of Umbria, known since the 13th century for its glassmaking tradition. In the surrounding hills, the tiny, fortified hamlet of Greppolischieto sits at 2,150 feet above sea level, its ancient walls still intact, with views stretching west to the largest lake in central Italy, south toward the volcanic hills of Lazio, and east into the Tuscan hills. The fashion designer Anna Fendi bought and restored the castle here in the 1970s.
