A Three-Bed Swedish Country Home for $25,000

Imagine a summer morning in the Swedish countryside.

You carry your coffee into the garden. Leaves stir overhead, and through the trees you catch a glimpse of the lake.

You could take a fishing rod down to the water…spend a few hours exploring local waters by canoe…or follow a forest trail and see where it leads.

There’s no rush to fit everything in. These are the long days of a northern Swedish summer, when there’s still light well into the evening.

And you have a country home of your own to come back to—with room for family and friends.

You might expect a retreat like this in one of Europe’s wealthiest countries to come with a substantial price tag.

But the three-bed home I’m sharing today is on the market for just €21,860 (about $25,000)…

This country home in northern Sweden comes with around an acre of land.

To step back for a moment…

Recently, my scout and Editorial Director, Ciaran Madden, returned from a 600-mile journey across southern Sweden.

He explored medieval lakeside towns…walked along the coast…and found country retreats at prices that would surprise anyone who associates Sweden with high costs.

In Vadstena, he found apartments within walking distance of the historic center and Lake Vättern. In Varberg, he discovered a year-round coastal town with a medieval fortress, a sea-bathing tradition, and sandy surfing beaches.

His trip showed just how different the real estate picture can look beyond Sweden’s major cities.

Today’s property continues our exploration of Swedish real estate and takes us to the Åmsele area in the north of the country…

The lake is approximately 820 feet from the house. Local wildlife include moose and deer.

Built in 1945, the house has about 775 square feet of living space, with three bedrooms and one bathroom.

Large windows bring natural light into the living area and frame the surrounding greenery. The kitchen could do with some updating, but there’s plenty of scope to make it your own.

It’s a modest country home, with enough room to bring family or have friends come to stay.

Outside, open lawn and mature trees fill a plot of over 43,600 square feet—around an acre.

This is a space where you could create a vegetable garden…find a shady spot for a hammock…or set out a table for summer lunches.

There are partial lake views, and the water is just 820 feet away.

Red timber siding, white trim, and decorative balcony railings give this country home a distinctive character.

This part of Sweden offers plenty of reasons to spend your days outdoors.

Åmsele is one end of the Isälvsleden, a hiking and cycling trail running roughly 37 miles to the small town of Vindeln. It follows wooded ridges and passes lakes through terrain shaped by the Ice Age.

On one section of the Isälvsleden, the trail reaches a water crossing where walkers row themselves across in boats provided along the route. The system relies on an honor code. You must always ensure at least one boat remains on each side of the water when you leave!

There’s canoe hire in Åmsele, too, with options for exploring local waters. More experienced paddlers can venture onto the nearby Vindelälven river.

For someone who enjoys walking, fishing, and being out on the water, a home here could become a summer base.

Three bedrooms. An acre of land. Partial lake views. And water a short distance away.

All for $25,000.

And stay tuned for more discoveries from my team’s scouting trips…

Ciaran is just back from Sicily, where he’s found more mind-blowing real estate bargains. And I’ll soon embark on an epic scouting trip of my own, taking in Panama and Uruguay, followed—after a short break—by Morocco and Japan.
