I’ve just completed an in-depth scouting trip to the town of Lagos, on Portugal’s Algarve.
Lagos is something rare not just on the Algarve but around the world—an authentic and livable luxury beach destination.
I consider it to be one of the best discoveries of my two-plus decade real estate scouting career. A perfect beach town…

Lagos is a place where soft-sand beaches are lapped by pristine Atlantic waters…where golden and ochre cliffs rise from the ocean…where cobbled streets wind through a beautifully preserved Old Town…and where elegant yachts bob in a modern marina surrounded by restaurants, cafés and bars…
It’s walkable, welcoming, and packed with top-class restaurants, galleries, and boutique shops. And yet, for all its charm and sophistication, it remains authentic to its rich cultural heritage.
This unique collection of history, marina, beach, culture, and walkability has seen Lagos move into the ranks of elite European coastal destinations…joining the likes of Cannes, Puerto Banús, and Antibes.

Among them is Praia Dona Ana, a spectacular cove beach framed by towering golden cliffs and dramatic rock formations, with crystal-clear turquoise water and a sandy shore perfect for swimming and sunbathing.
TripAdvisor previously named it the Best Beach in Portugal. Condé Nast Traveler has rated it the best beach in the world.
This beach is iconic, but far from the only famous stretch of sand in Lagos…
There’s also Praia do Camilo, a postcard cove reached by a wooden staircase down through the cliffs.

A personal favorite of mine, and many locals, is Porto de Mós.
This half-mile sweep of golden beach framed by ochre cliffs is a perfect destination if you want a long walk on open sand or surf on long waves.

Lagos is a top-class beach destination, but it’s also so much more than beaches…
On the “luxury headland” where I’ve gotten RETA members this new deal is the Ponta da Piedade clifftop trail.
This is among the most photographed stretches of the entire Algarve. People fly across the world just to explore its golden rock formations, sea arches, and hidden coves.

Then there’s all of Lagos’ history and culture…
Lagos’ old town is a captivating warren of cobbled lanes set inside 16th-century walls.
Here, churches, galleries, boutiques, restaurants and cafés spill onto sunlit squares.

Within the town’s white-washed buildings with their red terracotta roofs you’ll find hearty local fare as well as some of the trendiest restaurants you can imagine…
And you’ll find that the day-to-day cost of living remains strikingly low here.
Coffee is still little more than a euro. Long lunches and fresh seafood dinners are affordable, unpretentious, and frequent.
Quality is high, prices are grounded, and life feels generous rather than squeezed.
Lagos is the most historic town in Portugal’s southern Algarve region. Its old town is just 10 minutes’ walk from the site of the new RETA-only deal.
No discussion of Lagos would be complete without talking about the marina…
Lagos is a town shaped by the sea. This is one of Portugal’s most historic port towns. In 1415, Henry the Navigator set sail with a huge fleet from Lagos, launching the Age of Discovery.
Today, the town’s marina is a modern, vibrant place…
The river frames life in downtown Lagos. On one side, the Old Town. On the other side, the marina and the long flat sands of Meia Praia.
In the marina, you’ll find sleek yachts, cosmopolitan cafés and restaurants, and polished promenades.
You can jump on a boat to go sailing, fishing, or cruising around the cliffs, sea stacks, and bluffs of the Western Algarve’s stunning coastline.
And it’s so accessible…
The marina is just a short walk over a short pedestrian bridge from the old town.

Lagos has a magic formula of incredible weather, golden beaches, spectacular cliffs, modern marina, and historic old town. It’s all walkable and compact. Easy.
A highly desirable and rare package.
Plus, it has all the other things you would expect of a major top-tier luxury destination like top-class golf.
The Algarve is one of Europe’s top golfing destinations. Around Lagos, you’ll find exceptional golfing options like the Palmares resort.
It’s a place that feels calm rather than hectic, elegant rather than flashy—safe, civil, and quietly confident.

Foreign buyers can typically borrow up to 70% of the purchase price, with rates currently available below 3%.
