Before flying to Uruguay on Tuesday, I spent the weekend in the highlands of Panama—and found more than spectacular views.
I was hiking above the town of El Valle de Antón with developer Alfredo Alemán when we had an unexpected encounter…
At the top, we bumped into Bart M., a member of my Real Estate Trend Alert (RETA) group. Bart has bought in off-market RETA deals in both Playa Caracol, a stunning beach community on the Pacific Riviera, and in Playa del Carmen on the Riviera Maya.
You never know where you’ll run into a RETA member. And that’s fitting for a group whose guiding idea is simple: When you look everywhere, there’s always opportunity somewhere…

El Valle de Antón is about an hour and 45 minutes from Panama City. Yet with its green hills and cool air, it feels a world away.
That’s one of the great perks of a Panama City base: the restaurants, shopping, and conveniences of a major global city, with beaches, tropical islands, and highland retreats within easy reach.
I stayed at La Compañía, a relatively new boutique hotel with gardens filled with artwork. After hiking to open peaks with views toward the Pacific, I returned for a spa experience that ended at a rooftop pool surrounded by nature.
The bigger story here is that Panama is moving to a new level—with sophisticated hotels, exceptional restaurants, and world-class tourism experiences.
I recorded a video in El Valle to give you a taste. Click below to watch.

P.S. My scouting trip now continues in Uruguay, where I’m exploring opportunities around the glamorous resort city of Punta del Este. Stay tuned for updates from the road…
