I’m talking about Isla Margarita, a Caribbean island just off Venezuela’s northeastern coast.
In the 1980s and 1990s, this was one of the Caribbean’s great resort destinations.
The catch is it’s part of Venezuela—and when the country’s economy unraveled, Isla Margarita’s tourism industry collapsed with it.
Decades of corruption and economic mismanagement had left Venezuela dangerously dependent on oil revenues.
When oil prices collapsed in the 2010s, the entire system unraveled.
Venezuela’s economy shrank by roughly 80%—one of the worst peacetime declines in modern history.
It led to a devastating humanitarian crisis and millions fled the country in desperation.
Tourism to Isla Margarita fell by 90% in a decade.
But what’s important to note is that most of the underlying tourism infrastructure never disappeared.
All the island needs to bounce back is for Venezuela to stabilize.
And now, for the first time in years, there are signs that may finally be happening.
